Greetings beloved church community,
We have an exciting and busy week ahead of us. Arthur is out of town all week, Kathy is out Thursday-Monday, and I am going to be back and forth between Fort Worth and here to be as available and accessible as possible. If you are in need of pastoral care or just need someone to talk to this week, please do not hesitate to contact me or the chair of elders, Bill Barnes.
On Sunday, however, we are continuing our historical sermon series, All the Families. My sermon text is one that I and many others have struggled with before, John 14:1-7, where Jesus says “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (6). In contradistinction to the way many have traditionally proof-texted this passage to prove that Christianity is the only religion, I am going to take a slightly different approach by saying that applying this passage to “religions” period is unhelpful, and that there is a much deeper message here than just “Christians are the only people saved.”
I look forward to seeing you on Sunday, as we explore a passage that many of us have struggled with, to see if it might contain resources to not only end one faith struggle, but to consider Jesus and the way we talk about him in a different light.
