When I was a youth minister, we once played a game where one youth was pulled away and told to do anything in his power to break into the circle that all of the other youth were going to make. That short of physical violence or bribery, no holds were barred. And sure enough, the other youth made a tight scrum, and for ten minutes this kid shouldered, maneuvered and tried to push his way into the group.
It was only then when I asked the scrum when they were told to keep that one kid out.
This Sunday, we continue on in Building Up Resistance, this time to jingoism—the transmission of a specific, exclusive nationalism to the work of God. We’ll be looking at the Ezra/Nehemiah narrative, and I look forward to seeing you then.
