by Rev. Kathy Bouchard:
“Thanks!” “Help!” “Wow!” These are the three one-word prayers that we talked about during the children’s moment on Sunday. They are simple, but when I keep them in mind they remind me to be open to God’s presence in all things and always.
For a couple of weeks, I’ve been praying the “Wow!” prayer as I consider all of the activity of Midway Hills Christian Church. It was interesting to hear people reflect on last week’s Echo. One person who was facing a challenging day said that she found peace in reading about the life of our church. Another said that there was so much going on, it made her tired just reading about all of it. I interpreted the comments of those two members as “Wow!” and I suspect that both of those people would agree that the “Wow!” goes to God. My prayer for each of you is that every day will bring you at least one reason to pray “Wow!”
A natural follow-up to the “Wow!” prayer is the “Thanks!” prayer. Hardly a week goes by without someone saying that they are grateful for the community they have found at Midway Hills, and they recognize this as a gift from God. If you haven’t already made it a habit, I suggest that you try listing the things in your life for which you are thankful. I hope the list is so long that you have to take a number of breaks before you complete the task.
Help! This prayer reminds us that God journeys with us even in the most difficult times. Whether we need help with things in our own lives or help in knowing how to respond to conditions of injustice in the world, we best begin by asking God for “Help!”
On Sunday we’ll welcome Arthur back from his days of retreat and vacation. We’ll share a meal and hear a report from the Vision Team. Some of us will travel to share in a celebration of the life of former member, Ruth Ragsdale, who helped shape this congregation’s ethos of radical welcome. I look forward to opportunities to pray the simple prayers “Wow!” “Thanks!” and “Help!” on Sunday and in the weeks ahead.
