She was previously the Minister of Church Life at Rolling Hills Church in Overland Park, Kansas. In addition to her role here at Midway Hills, she serves as the Executive Director/Founder of Immigrant Justice Advocacy Movement.
Laurie’s personal journey and passion for impacting missional justice issues started more than 27 years ago on her first mission trip to the Yucatan Peninsula where relationships with the people of the Yucatan pulled at her heart and mind. Since that time she has led 17 adult mission groups to challenge others to step out of their comfort zone and seek God. The motivation for her work is not only the beloved community, but because of her own young adult children Ben and Bonnie.
Minister of Community Life
Rev. Deborah Morgan-Stokes
Deborah Morgan-Stokes is a native Dallasite, a graduate of Bryan Adams High School and Texas Christian University where she received her B.S. in Secondary Education. (Go Frogs!)
Deborah taught school for a few years at L.G. Pinkston High School in West Dallas before feeling God’s Call take a turn. That Call had been nurtured by her church family at Northway Christian Church and other church leaders from around the Dallas area Christian churches, including several influential people from Midway Hills Christian Church. She chose Vanderbilt Divinity School in which to explore her deep faith curiosities and figure out the best ministry fit for her.
After completing her Masters of Divinity degree, Deborah worked part time with the YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter and Court Advocacy program while serving the small rural congregation of First Christian Church in Waynesboro, TN. Full-time congregational ministry led her to Saguaro Christian Church in Tucson, where she served as both Associate Minister, then Senior Minister for a total of 15 years before coming home to Dallas to serve as Senior Minister of East Dallas Christian Church. Deborah completed 16 years of service at EDCC, having reached a season when she and her husband, Don Stokes, needed time to slow down. They enjoy cycling around White Rock Lake and being Grauntie and Gruncle (great aunt and great uncle) to 3 great-nephews now 1, 3 and 6.
Deborah serves as Minister of Community Life working part-time, assisting the Senior Pastor in the areas of justice ministries, adult education, worship leadership and planning, and pastoral care.
